Can you believe that it’s October already? At the risk of deflating our Autumn euphoria, another Minnesotan winter is just around the corner, and that means you need to be prepared, especially with your car. Don’t wait until the first big dump of snow or winter freeze to make sure your car is ready for the season–being proactive with your prep work instead of reactive will make for a smoother, more comfortable transition into the darkest, slipperiest, coldest season in our lovely state.
What to do to prepare your car for Winter
First thing’s first, you’ll want to make sure your car is set up to not get stuck, or at least as best as you can. Whether you drive a tiny hatchback or a giant 4×4, snow tires are your best friend for keeping you safely on the road. All-season tires may also be tempting, but should be treated as the bare minimum for safe winter driving. A high-quality set of winter tires will ensure that your car starts, stops, and steers as efficiently and effectively as it can in slippery snow & ice conditions–experts generally recommend mounting your snow tires as soon as the temperatures are consistently below 45 degrees Fahrenheit.
In addition to snow tires, you’ll also want to make sure your car has cold-weather rated windshield washer fluid (with a spare container–this runs out quickly in snowy weather!) to keep the road visible. And since accidents do happen even to the most well-prepped people, all drivers should stock their cars with equipment to keep themselves safe in the winter. This means a small stash of non-perishable food, clean water, warm clothes/emergency blankets, and spare batteries/chargers for cell phones.
While we can’t prevent winter accidents from occurring, if you find yourself locked out of your car in the cold this season, keep Rapid Key Recovery’s number in your phone! Because COVID isn’t quite behind us just yet, all our technicians are taking extra safety precautions, using hand sanitizer, gloves, and masks as they perform their work, as well as doing their best to maintain proper social distance. We’re also offering a 20% discount on select services to ease the pain during what is (hopefully) the tail end of this pandemic. You can contact us directly through our website or at (612) 370-0222 for help with all your lock & key needs, whether for your car, business, or home.
