As Summer comes to a close, many families are experiencing a usually normal event that now feels brand-new again after a year of closures: kids returning to school and parents returning to the office. With fewer parents working from home and more kids getting back into the classroom, we’re seeing the return of the latchkey kid; the child who has the house to themselves after returning home from school.

Of course, if you’re setting your child up with this freedom (and responsibility) for the first time, you want to ensure that they have what they need to leave school and get to a home that’s comfortable and safe, and that might mean upgrading your home’s security.

Lock the Door & Don’t Let Anybody In

If your first rule for your latchkey kid is “always lock the door behind you as soon as you enter the house,” then you need to ensure that nobody can come in after them. This could mean upgrading your house’s door and window hardware (such as door handles, deadbolts, and window locks) to keep would-be intruders from breaking in. However, it could also mean a re-keying of your entire home to make sure that there aren’t any unaccounted-for keys floating around your community. Occasionally re-keying your home is a great security habit to get into (think of how many key copies we leave with neighbors, family, babysitters, etc), and only makes more sense once your kids are at the age where they can be left home alone. And of course, once you’ve re-keyed your home, that first brand-new copy can go straight to your new latchkey kid.

With kids going back to school and needing to get back into the house, you may need to upgrade your lock system. Whether the task is as simple as making a new copy of your house key or as complicated as a total re-keying or new hardware installation, Rapid Key Recovery is here for your needs.
